The school board:

  • Held its annual Truth in Taxation hearing as required by law. No one testified. However, 10 people spoke during the regular public comment section, several of whom asked the board to continue its lease for Wellstone International High School at the Minneapolis College Campus.
  • Received an update from the auditor that the audit would be a month late because the district failed to meet deadlines on supplying financial information.
  • Passed a series of resolutions on property taxes, bonding, and the final contracts with school employees.
    • The property tax levy is $280 million. For a home valued at $150,000, the increase will be $7 more next year. For a home valued at $350,000, the increase will be $17.

The Minneapolis Board of Education, or School Board, is the elected body responsible for governing finances and policies, establishing and monitoring the strategic direction and goals, and hiring and evaluating the district’s superintendent, who serves as the district’s chief executive.

The School Board is comprised of nine directors, elected by Minneapolis voters, and two student representatives who are appointed. The superintendent also serves as an ex-officio member of the board. Board members serve four-year terms, beginning in January after being elected in November. Each year in January, the school board selects its leadership, which includes a chair, vice-chair, clerk, and treasurer.
