Do you want to map Chicago? Even if you didn’t sing that out loud to the tune of Frozen’s “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” (I did), in this workshop, you can learn to do just that. We’ll explore the Chicago Data Portal and learn how to access shapefiles and data on topics we care about. We’ll also walk through how to create reproducible static maps in RStudio and talk through when maps are most useful and when they might actually be misleading.
Bio Charmaine Runes believes that data access, rights, and representation are issues of justice; and is committed to building community “power, not paranoia” (Our Data Bodies). She is currently a Master’s candidate of Computational Analysis and Public Policy at the University of Chicago. She enjoys running, rock climbing, vegan cooking, volunteering as a City Bureau Documenter and - more recently - creating quaran-zines.
