The election is over. We have elected our representatives. But now is the time to get down to the brass tacks of democracy, of governing by the people. What can we members of the general public do? How can we motivate ourselves to get the real work of democracy done?

Come celebrate with us in an uplifting “new-old” approach to egg ourselves on to become better citizens: a “Civic Saturday” gathering. Pioneered by Citizen University, Civic Saturday mimics a faith gathering, with more than a splash of entertainment: with music, poetry, the reading of “civic scripture,” a “sermon” (more like a pep talk), and a chance to explore new ideas in small breakout groups or Civic Circles.

Presenter Daniel Wolk, the organizer of the gathering and a Fellow with Citizen University, will draw on his experience as a Documenter with City Bureau during the sermon. He will include anecdotes of public officials staying mum about their opinions on matters they have devoted their professional lives to, on the grounds that they must remain “impartial.”

The recital of civic scripture, by Cassandra Kaczocha and Eve Pinsker, will reflect the “deep political time” of our nation’s history, enhancing the themes of the gathering.

Two talented artists will summon up our civic spirits by enlivening the themes of our gathering with their original work: Adam Gottlieb will lead us in the singing of two of his own songs, and Davon Clark will recite two poems that he has written for this occasion.

It’s all happening Saturday, Nov. 14th, from 1-2:15pm via videochat––register to receive access details.

This event is co-sponsored by Citizen University and City Bureau’s Documenters.
